Project Management Processes

Guide to Project Management Processes organized by Knowledge Areas

Project management processes are a systematic series of activities to achieve an end result by using one or more inputs to create one or more outputs. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) has defined 49 project management processes as part of its standard for managing projects and categorized them 5 Process Groups and 10 Knowledge Areas.

This guide provides a systematic breakdown of each Knowledge Area, outlining the processes, inputs, tools, and outputs that drive successful project execution. Each section starts with an overview of the knowledge area, the list of processes, key concepts, and links to the related study notes.

This guide is too detailed for the current version of the PMP® and CAPM® exams. We recommend the Project Management Processes section of our PM Fundamentals guide for a light-weight version of this guide. It organizes the project management processes by Process Groups (instead of Knowledge Areas) and is more aligned with the current certification exams.
