Formula-focused practice for PMP® and CAPM® candidates

PM Formula Challenge Exam — Dedicated Formula Practice for PMP and CAPM

BrainBOK PM Formula Challenge Exams concentrate an entire exam on formula-based questions — 100 for PMP, 50 for CAPM. They complement the full-length practice exams by isolating the calculation skills that earn you quick, confident points on exam day.

Anywhere from 2 to 5 questions on the real PMP® or CAPM® exam may require direct formula calculation. That range is modest, but its impact is disproportionate. Formula questions have objectively correct answers — there is no ambiguity, no "best" choice to debate. Candidates who know the formulas solve those questions in seconds and move on with a clearer head for the judgment-based questions that dominate the rest of the exam. Beyond the direct calculation items, many additional questions test formula concepts without requiring arithmetic — for example, asking what a CPI of 0.8 means for the project, or which EAC formula applies given a stated assumption. Conceptual fluency matters as much as memorization.

The full-length BrainBOK practice exams include formula questions in realistic proportion — 5 per PMP mock, 7 per CAPM mock. The PM Formula Challenge Exams go deeper. They present 100 (PMP) or 50 (CAPM) formula-only questions under timed conditions, covering every calculation topic PMI® references: earned value management, three-point estimating, communication channels, expected monetary value, project selection methods, and more.

Both PM Formula Challenge Exams are included in Plus and Pro plans alongside the PM Formula Study Guide PDF, a companion reference you can download and study offline.

What the PM Formula Challenge Exams Include

Each PM Formula Challenge Exam is a standalone, timed exam focused entirely on questions that require mathematical calculations. Every question includes a detailed rationale showing the formula, the substitution, and the correct computation step by step.

Formula Questions: Full-length Practice Exams vs. PM Formula Challenge Exam

The two types of formula questions serve different purposes. Understanding the difference helps you use each effectively in your study plan.

AspectFormula Questions in Full-length Practice ExamsPM Formula Challenge Exam
Design intentQuestions mirror the style and difficulty of actual PMP/CAPM exam questions — realistic exam simulationQuestions are not designed to mirror the real exam; they go deeper and broader to build thorough formula mastery
DifficultyCalibrated to actual exam difficulty — challenging but representativeHigher difficulty — includes complex multi-step problems and edge cases that rarely appear on the real exam
Question volumeApprox. 5 formula questions per PMP mock; 7 per CAPM mock — proportional to the real exam100 formula-only questions (PMP) or 50 (CAPM) — concentrated drill across every formula topic
PurposeGauge realistic exam readiness; experience formula questions in context with all other question typesBuild deep formula fluency, close gaps, and maximize speed and confidence for calculation items
When to useThroughout your study plan as your primary readiness benchmarkAs a supplementary drill once you have learned the formulas conceptually — not a substitute for the full-length practice exams

Why Formula Practice Matters — Even for Just a Few Exam Questions

The real exam rarely asks more than a handful of direct formula questions. But the return on formula preparation extends well beyond those calculation items.

Formula questions are guaranteed points
Unlike situational judgment questions where two answers can look equally right, formula questions have one objectively correct answer. If you know the formula and can execute it, the point is yours.
Speed frees time for harder questions
A formula question you can solve in 30 seconds gives you an extra minute for a complex scenario question later. Across 2–3 formula items, that recovered time adds up.
Formula knowledge improves conceptual understanding
Understanding how CPI, SPI, EAC, and TCPI relate to each other strengthens your ability to answer non-formula earned value questions — and those appear more frequently than the calculations themselves.
Confidence reduces exam-day anxiety
Walking into the exam knowing you will not stumble on any calculation question removes one category of worry entirely. That composure carries over to the rest of the exam.

Formula Topics Covered

The PM Formula Challenge Exams cover every calculation topic that appears in PMI®-referenced study material. Each question includes a step-by-step rationale showing the formula, the inputs, and the solution.

Earned Value Management
The largest formula category on the exam and in BrainBOK. Covers the full EVM family — from computing basic earned value through advanced forecasting and performance thresholds.

How to Use the PM Formula Challenge Exam in Your Study Plan

The PM Formula Challenge is a supplementary exam, not a replacement for the full-length practice exams. Here is where it fits in a typical BrainBOK study workflow.

1
Learn the formulas first
Use the PM Formula Study Guide PDF or the formulas section of the study guide to understand each formula conceptually before attempting timed practice. Know what each metric means, not just how to compute it.
2
Practice formulas within the full-length practice exams
As you work through the 6 full-length practice exams, pay special attention to the formula questions embedded in each mock. These appear in realistic proportion — mixed in with judgment-based questions, just like the real exam.
3
Take the PM Formula Challenge for concentrated practice
Once you are comfortable with the basics, use the PM Formula Challenge Exam to drill every formula topic under timed conditions. The 61% passing score and Very High difficulty rating make this a rigorous benchmark.
4
Review rationales and revisit weak formula areas
After completing the PM Formula Challenge, review the detailed rationale for every question you missed. Use flashcards and the study guide to reinforce the specific formula families where you lost points.
